Olivia Newton-John had the #1 single in the U.S. with “Physical.” The song remained on the top of the charts for ten weeks, ultimately becoming the singer’s most successful song ever.
“Physical” was a departure for Olivia Newton-John who had been best known as a soft-rock artist with ballads and songs from the Grease soundtrack. In fact, “Physical” was censored or banned by some radio stations because of it’s sexual connotations.
Olivia’s label tried to take the focus from any sexual interpretation by filming a video with Olivia working out in a gym with a group of overweight men. Over the course of the video the men are transformed into “physical” specimens. The video won a Grammy Award for Video of the Year in 1983.
